Chapter

29

There didn’t seem to be any leads to follow on Sally Benton’s bull until the animal turned up someplace. I called the brand inspector the next morning, just to touch base. She had nothing to report, but we agreed it could have been a theft, and she promised to stay in touch.

I turned my attention back to the cases of Muffy Davenport and Scooter McLeod. I had set myself two goals for the day. One was to visit Ollie Swade and catch him up on what we had learned about his dead cow. But first I wanted to locate Scooter’s old girlfriend, Angela Salerno, or at least start trying. I might get what I needed over the phone, but I wasn’t ruling out the possibility of a visit to Colorado, if that’s where she was living.

She proved hard to find. The department had electronic access to all the phone directories for Colorado, including unlisted numbers, but there was nobody by the name of Salerno in Fort Collins or anywhere else in the state. I expanded my search to include New Mexico, Wyoming, Nebraska, Utah, and Kansas. There was an Angela Salerno listed for Española, New Mexico, but she turned out to be a 76 year-old grandmother.

I decided to put in a call to the Fort Collins Police Department, and after several steps I got handed over to a Sergeant Charles Graebner. I explained the reason for my call.

“So all you have to go on is a two-year old Christmas card, and the possibility that some woman named Angela is a school teacher?”

“That’s it. That and the fact that she’s probably in her mid-forties.”

“And this is really important to your case?”

“I won’t know that ‘til I talk to her, Sergeant. But this is a murder investigation into a cold case, and she’s one of a very few leads we have. She and the victim may have been lovers.”

“Any reason to suspect she was the perp?”

“Only that she disappeared around the time the victim was killed. And her parents, who still live in Arizona, had a peculiar reaction when I told them we had found the man’s body.”

Graebner wanted to know more. “What do you mean by ‘peculiar’?”

“Her father acted like he wasn’t interested, and her mother started to cry.”

“Huh.”

“Anyway, I’d appreciate anything you can do. She could be using a married name, but I have no idea what it might be.”

“You’re not making this very easy for me.”

“Like I said, this could be important, and it’s about all we have to go on.”

“Sure, okay. The only thing I can think of is to get in touch with the school districts in our area. Maybe they’ll have a teacher named Angela about that age.”

“That would be a big help.”

“This may take a while. I’ll get back to you if and when I have something.”

“Thanks. I really appreciate this.”

There was just a hint of green in the pastures around Ollie Swade’s homestead, testimony to the recent rains. In fact, most of the Sonoita Valley was showing lots of new growth.
